Iron is a critical mineral that powers your body. It is the primary building block for hemoglobin, the molecule in your blood responsible for carrying life-sustaining oxygen to your organs and tissues.

Beyond blood health, iron is essential for:

  • Immune Function: Supporting your body's natural defenses

  • Energy Levels: Fueling muscle function and cellular metabolism

  • Physical Appearance: Maintaining healthy skin, hair, and nails

What is an Iron Infusion?

An iron infusion - also known as Intravenous (IV) Iron Supplementation - delivers iron directly into your bloodstream through a small IV catheter. At LIVation, we use Venofer® (iron sucrose). This method bypasses the digestive system, allowing for faster and more efficient absorption compared to oral supplements, which can often cause stomach upset or be poorly absorbed.

Why You Might Need An Infusion

If your iron levels are too low, your body cannot produce enough hemoglobin, leading to Iron-Deficiency Anemia. This condition is often identified by low serum iron, low serum ferritin levels, and high iron-binding capacity. While lab work is encouraged, some patients can experience symptoms even when lab work is ‘normal.’ Please reach out to one of our clinical staff if you have any questions!

Who is at Risk for Iron Deficiency?

Iron deficiency is the most common form of anemia. You may be a candidate for an infusion if you fall into one of these high-risk groups:

Women: Especially those with heavy menstrual periods, or those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or postpartum

Digestive Issues: People with Celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, or peptic ulcers

Post-Surgical Patients: Including those who have undergone bariatric surgery (like gastric bypass) or major trauma

Medication Users: Those on long-term anti-acid therapies

Dietary Restrictions: Vegetarians and vegans (iron from plant sources is absorbed less efficiently than from meat)

Why We Choose Venofer®

Venofer® is the most prescribed IV iron treatment in the United States and is trusted in over 82 countries.

Proven Track Record: Over 30 million patient years of exposure.

Extensively Researched: Studied in 65+ clinical trials with over 16,500 patients.

Clean Formulation: Dextran-free and Preservative-free

What To Expect After Your Infusion

Most patients begin to feel an improvement in their symptoms within several days to one week after the infusion. However, peak results may not be noticed until 4-6 weeks after administration. This is because red blood cells have a life cycle of roughly 28 days, so it can take time for the body to fully use the iron to replenish iron stores and rebuild hemoglobin in the blood.

Safety & Monitoring

Your safety is our priority. While true anaphylaxis is very rare, some patients may experience "infusion reactions”, as known as “iron flu”.

  • Observation: We monitor all patients for at least 30 minutes after the infusion to ensure stability.
  • Common Side Effects: These may include mild nausea, dizziness, headache, diarrhea, muscle cramps, or flu-like symptoms. Slowing the infusion rate can often alleviate these symptoms.
  • Important Note: Do not test your serum iron levels for at least 48 hours after your dose, as results will be temporarily inflated.

You should not receive Venofer® if you have a known hypersensitivity to iron sucrose.
